Dedicated to Stephen “tWitch” Boss who brought so much joy and left in so much darkness.

Though I've felt the inky blackness I have never drowned in that airless pit Like a cancer Depression eats away at the soul Devouring in whispers that haunt the mind While stealing the light of joy Before it can take root and grow What's worse is we often never know Until it is too late There is a great battle Between light and dark A war within those we love And sadder is that no amount of love or light Can irradiate the darkness away That void slowly eats away hope Dimming the ability to perceive the light No soul can thrive without light At least not indefinately Making the surrender to that void Look like release for too many Depression is a cancer of the soul -gws

With bleary eyes I seek them out There in the can upon my shelf I dip the scoop and pour in four I can't imagine adding more The water roils and rumbles And from the kettle's spout it tumbles Into my press of french design To make a potion most divine Four minutes seems to last forever As morning light, my walls, does feather Into my cup goes sugar and cream Awaiting the potion of bitter beans At last I add the dark rich brew And breathe in the familiar scent anew "Good morning!" the first sip says to my brain And now I'm ready to face the world again -gws

I cannot choose how others behave. I can only choose how I will react. I will choose the actions that protect my serenity. -gws

The only opinion of me that matters is my own. -gws

I am so much more than the expectations of others. -gws

It's so beautifully sad when our children cast off who we have known them to be to start creating who they wish to be. -gws

I hold the pen that writes my narrative. I determine what my truth looks like. - gws

I will tie starlight into my curls And paint my face in the deepest hues of garnet, ruby, and sapphire I will weave a gown from moonlight And trim it with lace born of pale sea foam and iridescent spider webs I will wear slippers shaped from silvery moss And adorn my throat in strings of silver and moonstone I will pull light from the edges of the darkest shadows And wrap it around myself like a cloak I will pull the reflected starlight from the water And craft a crown of dancing luminescence I will present myself beneath the radiant moon in this glowing finery And with Her blessing, I will shine as a reminder to all That there is no darkness without the light -gws

Gray mornings where the fog veils the landscape in its cloak of chilly mystery and muffles the sounds of a busy fall commute -gws
